In the novel, Harper Lee portrays Ewell as the average white southerner. His character shows ignorance, neglect, lack of knowledge and simple minded ways. Many traits that we see through Ewell are presented through his words and actions."Cap'n I..i'm real sorry they picked you to defend that nigger that raped my mayella".This reveals not only Ewell's racial ignorance towards the negro community but his lack of education by the colloquialism he speaks in. His name: Robert E. Lee Ewell this reveals to the audience how many southerners were still stuck in the typical racist beliefs that they had towards the Negro community. Robert E Lee was one of the best southern confederate generals and by alluding to a well-known Southern hero; it shows how southerners glorify their racist beliefs. Ewell spits in Atticus' face and Atticus look sat Ewell, wipes his face and walks away. This reveals to the reader a gap between the poor uneducated white farmers and the upper-class white southerners. The gap shows how different they are; an uneducated man acts with violence while an educated man turns the other cheek. This also reveals that the problem in the south is not only between the blacks and the white; it is between the rich and the poor, the smart and the dumb and the soft-spoken and belligerent. "Robert E. Lee Ewell a short bantam cock of a man approaches" . This reveals that the way that Ewell presents himself as man , has a southern feel to him. "Yes Mr.Finch I can read and i can write." . This quote reveals Ewells ignorance towards himself. He is not an educated man but in front of the jury he wants himself to be.

  2. Ewell's strongest characteristics are his mannerisms and colloquialism. The was he speaks and carries himself makes all of the difference to his character. Through his belligerent actions and rustic uneducated speech, we see his ignorance to not only the black community but to a world besides agriculture.
